How to Hang Anaglypta Wallpaper
Preparation is broadly the same across the range, but soaking time, paste method, and a few application details genuinely differ by collection – using the wrong soak time is the single most common cause of a poor finish, so check your collection below before you start.

Before You Start: Preparation (applies to every collection)
- Surfaces painted prior to 1960 may contain lead pigments – special precautions should be taken during preparation.
- To minimise the hazard in the event of fire, do not hang wallcoverings over polystyrene veneers.
- Keep the room warm and well ventilated.
- Turn electricity off at the main fuse box when working around switches, sockets, light fittings, etc.
- Remove any existing loose wallcoverings or linings. – Surfaces must be clean, smooth, and dry.
- Treat any areas affected by damp or mould at the source.
- Pre-treat new plaster or other absorbent surfaces with a fungicidally protected adhesive or “size.”
- Roughen gloss-painted surfaces with glass paper. Lining paper is recommended for uneven or contrasting surfaces.
- Freshly painted surfaces should be left for at least 3 days before application.
Before hanging, check all rolls are undamaged and share the same batch number. After hanging your first 2–3 lengths, check the result before continuing — claims can’t be accepted for paper hung beyond one roll where a defect was visible before hanging. Keep your labels until decorating is complete.
Soaking Time & Paste Method by Collection
| Collection | Paste method | Soaking time | Adhesive notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Armadillo Armadillo Contract Armadillo PTW | Paste-the-wall or paste-the-paper | None required — soaking won’t damage it, but isn’t necessary | Good-quality ready-mixed, or an adhesive suited to paste-the-wall. Avoid starch-based flake adhesives, especially for paste-the-wall. Don’t overlap at corners — trim accurately with a knife and straight edge instead. |
| PTW Colour | Paste-the-wall or paste-the-paper | None required | Anaglypta ready-mixed, or a ready-mixed adhesive suitable for PTW wallcoverings. Same corner-trimming note as Armadillo. |
| Brick Collection (Princess Street) | Paste-the-wall | None required | Good-quality ready-mixed adhesive, ideally Anaglypta’s own. Take care not to reverse-hang lengths — doing so can create visible shading variance across the wall. |
Luxury Textured Vinyl | Paste-the-paper | 10–12 minutes | Good-quality flake or ready-mixed adhesive suitable for heavyweight wallcoverings — follow the adhesive manufacturer’s instructions. |
| Original | Paste-the-paper | Minimum 15 minutes — traditional, high-paper-content product, needs full expansion. Décor Clever advises +5 mins. | Ready-mixed adhesive suitable for heavyweight wallcoverings, minimum ~1kg per roll. Small bubbles may appear as the paper finishes expanding after hanging — normal, and will disappear as it dries. |
| Supaglypta | Paste-the-paper | 15 minutes | Good-quality ready-mixed adhesive. Avoid flake adhesives — their higher pH can, in some cases, cause this product’s layers to separate. |
| Dado Panels | Paste-the-wall or paste-the-paper | None required — vinyl-based, same as the other no-soak ranges | Good-quality adhesive suitable for heavy wallcoverings; ready-mixed recommended, especially when pasting the wall. |
Hanging Guidance for Walls
- Measure 50cm (20″) out from a corner. Avoid an area with windows or other details for the first strip if possible. Using a plumbline as a guide, mark a vertical line from ceiling to floor. *Always check the roll width will be wide enough to fill the gap between the line and the corner – especially important in older properties, where corners may not be perpendicular.*
- Cut strips to length, allowing extra for pattern match and trimming. Apply adhesive, making sure the entire reverse is well covered, including the edges.
- **If paste-the-wall**, apply adhesive over an area large enough for one full length, making sure the pasted area exceeds the width required. **If paste-the-paper**, fold the pasted sides inwards and leave to soak for the time given in the table above – if soaking longer, make sure the paste doesn’t dry out before application; apply extra paste if needed.
- Position the paper following your guide line. Brush down starting at the centre, brushing out towards the edges. *Apply only very light pressure when smoothing – a good-quality brush is best, since rollers or spatulas can permanently flatten the surface.*
- Crease and mark with a pencil before trimming to size at the top and bottom, or around features like door frames.
- Remove any excess adhesive immediately with a damp sponge.
- Apply subsequent lengths in the correct direction, using butt joints and matching patterns as needed. *For Armadillo, Armadillo Contract, Armadillo PTW Collection, PTW Colour, and Brick Collection: avoid overlapping at corners – trim accurately with a decorator’s knife and straight edge instead. For Brick Collection specifically, take extra care not to reverse-hang any lengths.* Ensure all lengths are firmly adhered.
- This product can be painted once fully dry – normally 24-48 hours.
Hanging on Ceilings
Application is the same as walls, with these adjustments:
- If a ceiling isn’t square, it can be easier to hang strips across the shorter side.
- Draw your guide line 50cm (20″) from the edge of the ceiling, parallel to the ceiling edge.
- Brush the paper on starting at the centre, working outwards to expel air bubbles, using the same light pressure as for walls.
- Crease and trim at the edges, remove excess paste with a damp sponge, and paint once fully dry (24–48 hours) as above.
Hanging Dado Panels
Not on stairs:
- If a dado rail isn’t already installed, strike a straight horizontal guide line across the wall at your desired dado height.
- Cut the number of panels needed (one full panel is 64cm wide).
- Paste the wall or paste the paper, using a good-quality adhesive suitable for heavy wallcoverings — ready-mixed is recommended, especially when pasting the wall.
- Position the paper with the top of the design aligned to your guide line or dado rail. *Hang it the correct way up — the bottom of the panel is deliberately designed to be trimmed.* 5. Brush from the centre out to the edges, expelling air bubbles and ensuring full contact with the wall. 6. Trim the excess at the skirting board. 7. Remove excess paste immediately with a damp sponge.
On stairs:
Start the whole project (including the lower hall) at “Plumb A” (top of the stairs) or “Plumb B” (bottom), to avoid a poor visual result where the staircase length isn’t an exact multiple of the panel width.
- Mark a vertical line at the top of the stairs (Plumb A). If no rail is fitted, also mark one at the bottom (Plumb B), with a further line between the two as a trimming guide.
- A standard panel is 64cm wide, made up of two 32cm sub-panels – use half panels (32cm) on stairs.
- Start at the top (“A”) and hang the first 32cm half panel vertically. Trim carefully at the skirting, and use the offcut to fill in at the top of the panel – starting at “A” ensures the last half-panel at the bottom of the stairs trims correctly.
